The fall and winter months often require us to do a lot of cleanup work in our yards. It is also a good time to do extra jobs like gutter cleaning, etc. All of this may require the use of a ladder. So, here are a few reminders about using a ladder safely and how to avoid accidents and injury:

If the ladder does not have a secure footing, it will put you at serious risk of losing your balance and falling, so always check this before ascending the ladder. Check again if you walk away from it, as it may have moved a little. Even if you will not be going high up on the ladder it is still necessary.
It is not good to be too confident when using a ladder, especially when you are nearing the bottom rungs. Remember that even a fall from a short height can still cause injuries.
Another temptation when using a ladder is overreaching. Sure, it is very annoying having to go up and down the ladder just to move it over a fraction, but it is important to do so and helps to keep you safe. Don’t risk overreaching just to save yourself a few extra minutes. Instead, schedule the work when you know you have plenty of time for it.
Lastly, never position a ladder in front of a doorway. If you must do so, make sure the door is locked and let everyone in the home know they should not use it.
