Most people these days want to live in a home that has as much natural light as possible. However, many older homes were not designed to have a lot of natural light. If you live in an older property and would like to incorporate more natural light into it what are some ways of doing so? Here are just a few ideas:
One of the most popular ways to add natural light is with a skylight. Skylights are extremely effective at adding a lot of natural light to a home. If you decide on this option, just make sure that you choose double-paned windows and get the flashing done professionally, otherwise, you may end up with a leaky skylight.
If you want to add natural light but are worried about too much heat from the sun in the summer, then Clerestory windows may be a good choice for you. Clerestory windows are short in length but wide and are generally installed higher up. This allows the windows to fill a room with light, however, because of the roof overhang, it does not permit the sun to heat the room during the summer months when the sun is high. An additional advantage is that because the sun is lower in the winter, you can benefit from the warmth of the sun during the colder months.
A third option to add natural light into a home is with the aid of light tubes. These are tubes coated in highly reflective material. As light flows through the tubes into a room, a diffuser is fitted to help distribute the light evenly.
As you can see from these three options, it is very possible to add a lot of natural light to a darker home.
